I'm expecting my pekins to resemble giraffes tomorrow when I get home.
I'm off to my sister in laws funeral tomorrow, and spending the night at my brothers.
The auto door opener/closer will take care of the chooks but I didnt want to leave the food hopper in the run as those great big orange slimey slugs make a bee line for it once it's dusk.
So this afternoon I went out and fixed a big hook in the roof of the run and hung the feed hopper on it with a length of green garden twine. Had to laugh, the pekins all rushed over thinking I'd put some delicacey in their hopper, and they can just about reach the pellets in it.
It's about the height of their necks, about 1/2" down from their wattles, so they don't have to stretch too much, and the mice in the night won't be able to jump that high.
It's quite comical to see them feed now, cos as they circle the hopper and peck at the feed the hopper turns round on the twine. They're looking a bit confused bless 'em. |

I'm a bit concerned about 6 pekin eggs due to hatch on Thurs/friday this week. Our electrics schedulled to go off sometime tomorrow for maintenance work, so I'll have to take them with me and the incubator. I've got to drive 22 miles to my brothers, then plug the incy in again and then drive back Wednesday afternoon.
I'll wrap them in tissue and put them in an egg box inside the incy and hope it warms up quick once I get there.
Never moved eggs so close to hatching before. |

| two tricks .take a hot water bottle and stand the incubby on it and wrap in blanket and secondly copper wire wound round your feeders like a wire collar will deter slugs..........good luck |
