Goodness - I'd never thought there would be loads of rules and regulations for keeping bees!

What are sort of things do you have to do?

They're changing the rules on medication for bees. In the future it will be covered by VMD. So when I want to treat my hives for Varroa (a parasitic mite now endemic in England) I can't just buy the treatment I have to get it prescribed by a vet. Who no doubt knows as much about bees as he does about poultry and adds a consultation fee on for me telling him what I need.

They are also cutting the funding for seasonal bee inspectors too

Saw this on PP forum. Regarding the bit at the bottom, does it mean we won't be able to buy Flubenvet without prescription? I can get it off the shelf at the moment.

It does say that merchants will be able to prescribe certain things. I know when I bought my flubenvet from the Domestic Fowl Trust they took my name and address to write down in their book at the time - they didn't just hand it over...

And when someone wanted to sell surplus Ivermectin on PP, one of the replies said she she shouldn't as the original (online) merchant would have needed to be licensed to sell it, so she would have to be too (thread is on longer there, but generated the VMD update post....)

So I'm hoping thats what the VMD update means ie you can only buy from people who are licenced to give you what you need. A bit like you can only get certain things for people from a pharmacist. After all they say we shouldn't notice much difference.

Of course I could be horribly wrong Confused

When we were at the vets on Monday he mentioned flubenvet is PML . So you should be able to buy it without a prescription

has anyone made plans for keeping their chooks inside yet?

With the news today that British vets believe it will reach here, even the OH is starting to look worried

Since mine are all free-range, mixing with wild birds all the time
I think that I will have to do something sooner rather than later
The Oh thinks it would be a good idea to put the breeding stock inside,

What is everyone else thinking or planning?

Not to but a downer on it but if stock outside becomes infected then your stock inside would be culled. I have known this could be coming for a while its so sad. I only have 3 birds left these days and i guess i will move mine inside. I am about to give all my Jap quail growers away in order to get ready and give me more time when i start Teaching college!

Oh's idea is to move the breeding stock soon, then move the rest if legislation comes in like in Holland

i just watched newsnight ,it'll scare people anyway ,the turkeys will have to live in the goat shed but because i'm the same as deb then i'm going to have to cull most of my stock ,i've got about room for 12 to 15 inside all the time
