Hi there,
New to all these chickens and work in Wrexham. Just got 4 chickens from farm world deeside and currently in enclosure in back garden. Looking for a couple of more birds to go along with them. What are wellsummers like with other breads?
Also do you know if it is possible to keep partridge or pheasents along with chickens.
Kindest regards,
Steve (ALCO262) |

I've heard that partridge and pheasants don't go too well with chickens - I can't for the life of me remember why though!
I do know that if you're keeping them confined to a run pheasants especially need MUCH more room than chickens, like 10ft x 10ft minimum!
if they range freely you risk loosing them. |

I have thought about keeping partridge myself for meat,iv'e a friend who runs the wynstay estate shoot he keeps partridge on there own in small runs for breeding purposes but the partridge and pheasant adult birds are quite good scratters and so they will need moving quite frequently to avoid a terrible mess and smell in the garden.
Welsummers are lovely birds to keep and become hand tame quite quickly also they lay an excellent dark brown egg of good size, again though they are large fowl and as such require a good amount of grazing either a good movable run or somepeople use permanent runs but give extra greens.
Just worth mentioning ive got hens in permanent runs and free range hens the freerangers are by far darker yolked eggs. |

Most chicken's once they have time to get used to each other will become friendly to each other even if bantam's are kept with large fowl in my experience your more likely to have problems if cockerals are kept together for the first time but they usually get used to each other with time, what type did you purchase from farmworld?
p.s. thanks vikki received cheque o.k. chez+dan x |

Dear seriphines,
My partner bought four WARRENS all hens although one may be a bit suspect. Would seem to be acting a little too much like a cock!!!!!!!!!
Having said that IT is 4 weeks older than the others who are now at 12 weeks we are informed.
The people at Farn World were very helpfull and have stated that should we have any problems with the birds or their sex then wizz them back around the corner.
With referance to your Welsummers do you have any hens for sale. If so at what age are they and for how much.
Would be nice to have a couple of partridge in the enclosure as it would seem that a pheasant is not such a good idea.
Our birds are to be kept in the confines of the enclosure ( 4mtrs x 2.8mtrs x 3.5mtrs in height) during the day and will be let out to roam the enclosed garden when we are in. This all being possible only after they are used to being handled.
Many kind regards,
Steve & Dee (ALCO262) |

Dear Dan & chez,
Would it be possible for us to come over and view the birds sometime at the weekend. If so could you give you contact number and location in wrexham.
Many kind regards,

Dear jaydee67,
Yes I am aware that Partridge can also mean a variation of chicken having read it the other day on the Omlet bread listings. We are both new to keeping chickens but I have been involved in the past with raising game birds, hence would like a couple of Game Partridge's to go with the chickens for my pleasure.
This is all assuming that there would be no cross breed problems. However, I am still awaiting advise with the mixing of these birds but not as yet had a reply from anyone.
Are you able to help with this matter.
Kind regards,
Steve & Dee |

| Hi Steve and Dee, I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew there was a colour variation called' partridge' too. I didn't until I read it on here. I haven't kept quail or partridges with my birds but I'm sure someone has. Perhaps a new topic under the general and misc forum would get you the answers you need - not everyone comes in here. |
