Hi Bhindi
This is our brick built hen house!
We actually built it (well Mark did!!) for our German Shepherds, but when our bitch died last year our Dog refused to stay in there and now lives in our conservatory!!!
So the chickens have taken over!!

| oooh excellent house and run for your girls. I think the rest of us had better keep our girls away from the computer for a while, or else they'll all want one as lovely as that! |

| I'm new to chickens & I have a small ark at the moment but I'm building a wooden house but with a raised concrete floor for easier cleaning. I thought it would be the best of both. |

Course you can have one George!!
You just need to dig up 3500 old 2 and a quarter inch bricks - and I'll send Mark over to come and build one for you!!!
(He spent months and months digging up the bricks for that house - Bless!)
We've actually got a hedgehog living in there at the moment - so although the girls potter about in there during the day - they are sleeping in the wooden hen house!
(There's no accounting for taste!!)
The side with the window blanked off was where Running Bear and Little Dove slept - before moving in with the rest of the girls. That is now prepared ready for our next additions!! (Not sure what yet - would love some pure bred Marans - preferably ones that lay eggs!!! lol or to get some more Lavender Araucanas)
The side with the open window is where the hedgie is - once he/she has moved out - I would love to get a breeding trio of something - but that's when I've got a bit more experience under my belt!!!

that was exactly the sort of thing I had in mind, and I would have been REALLY envious had it not been for the fact we're shortly about to move and i've got this..to convert to a hen house
So all things going to plan, I think I will be happier dealing with the weather this winter.... God I could say some foul language when the wind would pick up all the paper i'd just laid
I look forward to planning the logistics of the internal issues.... should I make an access on the outside to collect eggs???? |

No need, it looks like you'll be able to walk in. Hang nest boxes on the walls at waist height is what I would do That way there'll be no stooping down to pick them up. If you build or lean a ladder up against the wall next to the nextboxes, the hens will be able to hop up and in.
Hopefully, when we move, I'll have a convertable building for chooks. I know so much more now, I'll be able to customize it so that there is little hard work |

That looks just perfect Bhindi!
From the pic you've posted I can't see a reason why you would need another access.
How many chooks could you get in there do you think??? Hee Hee

Being as its quite close to the house I had a struggle negotiating with my partner for it to be the chook house at all so I dont think I should add to my stock of 6, unless 1 pops off... and then I KNOW you must be in pairs at least |

Hi,
We have a converted brick build kennel as a hen-house - the chooks love it, trouble is it was way too big for the 4 hens we got first out - I just had to buy more.........they looked so lonely in this big house on their own.... it was for their welfare not because I'm become addicted..... honest |

I have a 4 m x 4 m kennel i am going to use for my girls, it is made from breeze blocks and has windows,so there is plenty of natural light and ventilation, we had racing greyhounds in there, they have electric light, running hot & cold water and a heater if they want it on, going to put up some nest boxes and a couple of perches and i think that should do them OK, i like the thought of if (when) the weather turns bad i can still spend time with them without getting soaked to the skin. |
