Cinnamon, my bovan's nera has tried being broody twice, the first time I got her out of it, this time I gave in and got her some eggs. My daughter who is staying has a soft spot for orpingtons, so I got some lf eggs from ebay ~ black dad and splash mum, so they were said to be blue.
Yesterday, day 20, there was an empty egg shell in the nest and a tiny bluish chick.
This morning another egg shell and later I saw 3 chicks in the nest box with mum ~ some with more yellow fluff than yesterday's. Mum is still sitting tightly in the box on the eggs, so I'm hoping that menas we might get a few more, but if not, I'm very happy with 3 out of 6 ~ all girls, of course.
Will keep you informed of her progress. |

Aww - new chickies! CongrHATCHulations! Hope you get a couple more and that your family enjoy watching them while they are staying with you - what an excuse - I didn't really want more chickens - I had to do it for the family! |

I got an email with a photo today, from the person who we're house swapping with, her Light Sussex got broody, so they gave her some chicks. It'll be like home from home, looking after little babies |

At the last count, not including these little chicks ~ I have 20 ~ not all laying. In fact, if I'm being honest most aren't laying ~ if I get 3 eggs in a day then I'm doing well and these are more likely to be pekin eggs !
I have 7 too young to lay (6 of these are bantams and one is a beautiful young white orpington), 3 pol large girls(one of which I think has just started to lay little pointy eggs). Of the rest 3 think they want to sit on eggs and one actually is, so I have 6 bantams laying.
When they sort themselves out (if they ever do) I should have 6 large girls and the rest will be bantams, plus any girls that come from the new babies........naturally they're all going to be girls!!! I think I have one boy in the household, my silkie, but I live in hope that I'm wrong..in the meantime anyone interested in golden silkie bantam? |
