My hen Brenda has for some reason suddenly stopped walking. She just sits down most of the time, and when she gets up she wobbles about for a few seconds then sits again. At first i thought she may have broken a leg, but now i'm not sure. Does anyone know what's wrong???! |

Just went through this. Believe it to be Mareks for me. I was told to try 10% baytril mixed with water for her, but do not get baytril over here.
First step is to seperate her out from the rest. Then get her on the antibiotics. Get some Citricidal to treat your whole flock....there are links were to get it in the FAQ area under useful links.
Other than that...are there any other symptoms? wheezing, snotty nose, runny eyes? |

Thanks Deb for the advice, but I'm not sure that it's Mareks. She has no other symptoms except the legs, ans she's had this problem nearly a week. She eats and drinks normally, and (as far as I know) her droppings are normal. She's just very wobbly, and doesn't want to walk. Do you have any info on Mareks for me so I can check it out?
P.S. sorry to hear about those hens of yours that suffered from Mareks. My Brenda's (so far) nowhere near that bad. |

Mine were not bad either...eating and drinking, bright eyes and alert. Not a single other sign except that they could not walk.
If you look in the FAQ area, I posted a link to several online Vet manuals...you will find Mareks listed in there.
I hate to say it or even think it...but did you look at the link that Nigel posted about the Newcastle? There is a pic of a hen that just can not walk....looked the same as mine.
My fingers are crossed for you. I ended up trying to save the first few...NOTHING worked. So rather than watch them slowly dwindle and suffer, I just culled them as soon as they stopped walking. Never had a pm done on them.
Please keep us informed and let us know of any progress. |
