It's our local show here today - so local it's in the field next door! Very quiet, no sheep, cattle or goats.

Thanks for merging the threads Stephen. I couldn't think straight enough to do it last night!

I haven't read anything about stopping movements of poultry or waterfowl, only cattle, pigs & sheep (presumably goats too)

On the map shown last night on BBC News 24, we are just outside the 10km surveillance zone.

We are just outside the surveillance zone, between Crondall & Ewshot & my friends farm is between Farnham & Dippenhall, luckily.

I'm not sure if there's lots of livestock inside the zone or not, but there must be quite a few farms affected.

Science lab suspected in foot and mouth outbreak

From The Observer

Quote:
An accidental leak of an experimental vaccine from a private research site was being investigated urgently last night as the likely source of Britain's new foot and mouth disease outbreak. The news came as the government attempted to avert a full-scale crisis in farming and the tourism industry.

Movement of all livestock has been banned, exports to Europe stopped and country fairs cancelled to minimise the risk of the country suffering a disastrous rerun of the 2001 foot and mouth epidemic which cost the nation £8.5bn.

Scientists made a breakthrough last night as they identified the strain of the virus as one which is not naturally occurring, but is a vaccine strain, and has never been seen before in Europe. This enabled investigators to link the outbreak to a company which lies less than three miles down the road from the source of the outbreak.

Merial Animal Health, a private pharmaceutical firm shares facilities with a government laboratory in Pirbright, and is commissioned by the European Union to formulate new vaccines for animal diseases. Both companies are expected to meet tight regulatory standards for biosecurity.

Investigators are now focusing on whether there was a lapse which meant that a batch of the vaccine, made last month, escaped the site. The company is believed to test its vaccines on animals, which may have been able to graze on the land. The virus may have been carried by the wind, or by people or vehicles down the road from the site to a rented field in the village of Normandy, near Guildford, where the outbreak happened.

Apparently the Hogs Back (A31) road in the F&M area was closed yesterday after a car hit & killed a deer. They had to disinfect the car, the road.....

to be honest this scares the hell out of me ,the roof leaked a few times Crying or Very sad ,

not sure how to do the quote thing from defra site

In addition, as a precaution because of potentially dangerous contacts, susceptible animals on one farm located next door to the field are being culled.
that is on top of the cattle numbers i think

in scotland we have now been permission to bury stock on the farm ,if you do go into the country side please use the foot dips that will be out and use any tire washs ect ,if you have livestock make sure the distinfectant is defra approved ,i know that a people who have livestock are frightened ,
the new animal health act make it an offence to hinder or not help animal health ,the animals can be slaughtered as a dangerous contact ,although if you report a suspected case they will test and rule out
that i put on slightly eariler had a link called the feilds of fire it is what happened last time ,(it is harrowing reading,so don't open it unless you really want to),
apart from the news it's the link a few people are using
hopefully they will vacinate this time ,
please follow advice that is given
i hope this post is ok Confused ,if not feel free to remove it or change it
